Posted On April 8, 2023Nokia and OpenColo, two technology companies focused on data center connectivity and colocation services, have announced the successful completion of the industry’s first trial of a 1.6 Terabit/s traffic flow over an 800GE link aggregation group with 800GE FR4 optics. The trial is expected to have far-reaching implications for data center interconnect technology and could pave the way for further innovation in the field.
The trial, based in Silicon Valley, involved the use of the Nokia 7750 SR-1se router equipped with FP5 silicon to enable 800GE interfaces, and the Nokia 1830 PSI compact modular optical transport platform equipped with Photonic Service Engine (PSE) coherent interfaces. Nokia is the first vendor commercially shipping 800GE routing solutions in volume from 2022.
The successful completion of the trial marks a significant milestone for both companies, as they were able to achieve seamless line rate performance of 1.6 Tb/s without any packet loss. The trial also demonstrated the industry-first application of 800GE link aggregation for high-capacity data center interconnect, including both full link resiliency with coherent optical transport.
Scott Brookshire, Co-founder and CTO at OpenColo, expressed his satisfaction with the trial, noting that Nokia delivered on their promise of seamless line rate performance. Brookshire said, “At OpenColo, we constantly strive to push the limits of what’s achievable to anticipate the ever-evolving demands of our valued customers and the market. With Nokia’s groundbreaking release of 800GE, we had full faith in their ability to provide us with seamless line rate performance of 1.6 Tb/s without any packet loss. True to our expectations, Nokia delivered on this promise.”
Jeff Jakab, Vice President of IP Hardware Product Management at Nokia, highlighted the economic advantages of 800GE compared to 400GE, stating that adopting 800GE routing is a simple and clear solution to the immediate power concerns faced by the industry. Jakab said, “The economic advantages of 800GE in comparison to 400GE are clear, being cost-neutral to 400GE today and providing up to a 40 percent power savings versus 400GE today. Adopting 800GE routing is a simple and clear solution to the immediate power concerns our industry faces.”
The successful trial is expected to have a significant impact on the data center networking industry, as it demonstrates the viability of using 800GE routing solutions to handle large amounts of traffic flow. This could lead to further innovation in the field and could help to address the power concerns faced by the industry.
In conclusion, Nokia and OpenColo have successfully completed the industry’s first trial of a 1.6 Terabit/s traffic flow over an 800GE link aggregation group with 800GE FR4 optics. The trial marks a significant milestone for both companies and is expected to have far-reaching implications for data center interconnect technology. The successful trial demonstrates the viability of using 800GE routing solutions to handle large amounts of traffic flow and could lead to further innovation in the field.
