Apple in-car

Apple isn’t just sitting around waiting for technology to happen. Apple is making the technology happen. With the same tools and the same techniques that Apple took the Smartphone market by storm, they are about to revolutionize car infotainment.

Apple in-car

It is rumored that by 2018, approximately half of the new cars on the market will have Apple’s new in-car technology installed as a standard feature. Despite the fact that June was the first mention of the iOS in the Car and it hasn’t appeared yet in a production car, infotainment is going to change dramatically in the coming years with Apple’s technology.

Consumer Expectation

The truth is that consumers expect more when it comes to the functions in their car’s systems. Smartphones have changed the way people live and have forced individuals to think differently about the way they run their lives. Consumers are demanding to use their smartphones inside their cars, and the systems available from the past are simply not cutting it. Consumers want more in infotainment solutions.

The problem is that many automobile manufacturers already have their own systems installed. They have to ensure that the systems that come standard with their vehicles do not mess with the smartphones that so many drivers are using. They have to cater to Smartphone users, allowing integration where customers can use their smartphones in their cars. It is not an easy process, but one that car manufacturers realize is necessary.

The good news is that Apple introduced Siri Eye Free in June of 2012, allowing drivers to use their iPhones while they drive, without much distraction. Drivers are able to use voice commands to play their music, navigate their way through town, and even send messages to others.

Getting on Board

Because they could see the expectations of consumers and the ease that it put on drivers and other individuals, many automobile companies got on board with the program very quickly. Jaguar, General Motors, Land Rover, and Honda all adopted the system. Mercedes introduced the system as a standard feature in a production car for the first time in September of 2012. GM has also gotten on board since then, also providing the system as a standard feature.

The Latest and Greatest

In June of 2013 at the World Wide Developers Conference, the iOS in the Car platform was introduced by Apple. It is basically the Siri Eye Free program, evolved into something greater.

The dashboard of the vehicle will mirror the screen of a driver’s Smartphone, allowing the driver to check maps, listen to music, make a call, and more. The program is expected to arrive in production cars sometime in 2014 and is already being picked up by some major automobile manufacturers. Some of those include Toyota, Hyundai, Jaguar, Volvo, Honda, Ferrari, and Mercedes-Benz

Ever-Changing Technology

Because technology is constantly changing, there’s no way someone can accurately predict what the infotainment industry will look like in a few years. However, researchers believe that the new iOS in the Car technology will become a standard feature and be in at least half of the production cars on the market by the year 2018.
