Feb 06, 2013– Pretoria, South Africa (Techreleased) – A new price leader has been added to the range of rugged Scorpio SUV models marketed by Mahindra South Africa. It is a rear-wheel drive, seven-seater derivative with a 2,2-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The newcomer, which is priced at R209 900 – R20 000 less expensive than the lowest priced diesel-engine variant – swells the local Mahindra Scorpio SUV line-up to five models. There are three with two-wheel drive and two with four-wheel drive, along with the option of a five-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission. Thus, there is now an even wider range to suit customer requirements.

The turbocharged 2,2-litre mHawk petrol engine was developed from the CRDe turbo diesel engine of the same capacity in a joint venture involving Mahindra’s own engineers with those from global powertrain specialists, AVL of Austria. The mHawk petrol engine develops 115kW of power at 4 500r/min. and 280N.m of torque from 1 800 – 3 000r/min.

This engine is offered only in export markets, where it has significant price advantages in many countries, allied with the popularity of petrol as a power source for vehicles in certain regions of the world.
The introduction of this mHawk petrol engine in addition to the recently upgraded mHawk CRDe diesel engines on the Scorpio range is in line with Mahindra South Africa’s policy of ongoing improvement to its vehicles, in line with customer feedback.

“The decision to introduce a petrol variant and to standardise the mHawk CRDe engine for all Scorpio models in South Africa follows two earlier customer benefits announced for buyers of the current third generation Scorpio range which was introduced to South Africa in 2009,” said the CEO of Mahindra SA, Ashok Thakur.

“First, we included a company-backed 3-year/60 000km service plan in the retail price and subsequently added an Eaton mechanical locking rear differential to all the Pik-Up models. Standard four-wheel drive locks only one front and one rear wheel in slippery conditions, while the mechanical locking rear differential provides equal power to both rear wheels for far better traction.

Now we have topped these offerings with the standardisation of the new technology mHawk engines for all models in the Scorpio range.

And the best news is that we have kept our very competitive price positioning despite all these additional benefits,” said Thakur.

“The Scorpio’s strong value proposition lies in its versatility and its ability to morph and mould itself according to the changing template of customer needs,” said the automotive sector president of Mahindra & Mahindra, Dr Pawan Goenka, at the launch of the latest Scorpio range.

He added at the time that he saw the Scorpio, with its go-anywhere capability, as a key to the success of Mahindra in South Africa, which was seen as a very strategic market in the company’s overall globalisation vision.

The Scorpio SUV is very well-equipped with three rows of seats to carry up to seven occupants. Convenience features include cruise control, air conditioning, an audio system with controls on the steering wheel, power windows, map holders, bottle holders and a host of utility spaces, including a large glovebox.

The current Scorpio range is equipped with dual airbags and anti-lock braking (ABS) as standard.

The 4×4 derivatives have a low range Borg Warner transfer box offering low range for dealing with extreme off-road conditions. Four-wheel drive is put into operation on the fly with the twist of a switch.
“What we are doing is building on Mahindra’s excellent global reputation for reliability and durability by adapting the vehicles sold in South Africa to suit the requirements of our growing band of customers, while extending the dealer network to ensure high levels of after-sales service,” concluded Mahindra SA CEO Ashok Thakur.
