Huawei and China Telecom Unveil World’s First Optical Transport SDN – Nov 03, 2014– Xiamen, China (Techreleased) – Huawei, together with China Telecom Fujian (Fujian Telecom) and China Telecom Beijing Research Institute announced recently the successful deployment of the world’s first innovative Transport Software-Defined Network (T-SDN). The T-SDN implements an intelligent private line Bandwidth on Demand (BoD) app for VIP customers over a transport network, and IP + Optical synergy for data centers, leading transport networks into the SDN era.

China Telecom continuously devotes itself to the innovation and practice of cutting-edge ICT technologies, and has determined its “Internet-based Transformation” road map. Transport SDN will be an important part of China Telecom, and lead the IT and intelligence transformation of transport networks.

Private line services for VIP customers present a valuable strategic market for major telecommunications providers like China Telecom. The China Telecom Beijing Research Institute took the lead in introducing the concept of intelligent private line based on Internet and SDN concepts developing an innovative private line BoD app. Huawei provided the network side T-SDN controller to aid in the deployment.

With the app, tenants can apply for private line services online which are provisioned immediately and on-demand. In addition, tenants can adjust the service bandwidth of private lines in real-time based on traffic volume, making full use of bandwidth resources. Operators can then check the detailed service performance of each customer, facilitating analysis and prediction of customer behaviors and developing flexible private line services that meet diverse customer requirements, with the aim to generate increased revenue.

Zhang Chengliang, Vice President of China Telecom Beijing Research Institute, said, “We are glad to cooperate with Huawei in the optical transport SDN field and to have successfully deployed the world’s first innovative T-SDN. The deployment proves that SDN-based open architecture and the standard northbound interface can realize various innovative applications and interwork with network platforms. It is a key milestone for the development of transport SDN.”

Zha Jun, President of Huawei Fixed Network Product Line, said, “Huawei cooperated with China Telecom to deploy the innovative BoD private line app based on the transport SDN. The deployment is a key milestone that effectively pushes progress of the transport SDN industry. Huawei will continue to cooperate with China Telecom in developing cutting-edge 400G, 1T, 2T, and SDN technologies, and building a flexible, synergetic, intelligent, and open next-generation transport network.”

The centralized control mode and open platform of SDN are transforming transport networks. New services and applications are emerging, such as the innovative BoD private line app, virtual customer networks, SMD virtual test instruments, cloud and network synergy, and automatic online operation, which are making transport networks more open and flexible. Better refined services and visible management modes significantly simplify network operation and maintenance, maximizing the service experience on transport networks.

As an advocate of SDN and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Huawei is committed to optimizing network architectures and developing future-ready SDN architectures as well as empowering the maturity of SDN technology in domains such as mobile backhaul, data centers, backbone networks, and smart metro networks. Huawei will cooperate with players in the end-to-end SDN industry chain, including in technologies, standards, applications, products, and solutions, with the end goal of promoting the healthy development of the industry. The ultra-broadband era has arrived, and Huawei hopes that through its significant investment and key partnerships, it can provoke discussion and implementation of win-win scenarios in creating a better connected world.
