EnChroma Sunglasses

It may be surprising for you to learn that millions of people live with a color vision deficiency, or color blindness, of some kind. According to recent statistics, approximately one in ten men suffer from either red green colorblindness or a red weakness form of colorblindness. While women are diagnosed with these conditions at a much smaller rate, they too can experience the same color deficiencies. With statistics such as these, if you do not suffer from color blindness yourself, chances are that you know someone who does.

EnChroma SunglassesIt is likely that you are unaware people who suffer from a color vision deficiency because instead of showing large notable symptoms, the problem manifests in many small day-to-day inconveniences. People with color vision deficiencies may have trouble reading traffic signals, knowing if fruit is ripe, or being able to coordinate and match colors. While these signs may not be extremely noticeable to other people, these small issues can add up to major frustration for those with the deficiency.

Luckily, EnChroma has stepped up to the plate to provide solutions for these people. This fall, they will be releasing a new line of sunglasses to help colorblind people identify colors more easily. EnChroma was inspired by the protective eyewear that is often used by surgeons who work with lasers. The protective eyewear implemented special coatings that filtered light differently, and EnChroma saw how this technology could be used to help colorblindness.

The technology used within these glasses is quite complex, yet makes great logical sense. Basically, the glasses have an advanced optical coating that allows the lens to selectively filter the light that reaches the eye in order to enhance the colors being viewed. The wavelengths that are filtered through the lens have been perfected so greatly that the enhancing affect is far superior to pervious similar technologies. The result is that the wearer is better able to perceive and distinguish colors like never before.

It should not be expected that these sunglasses will be a miracle device, completely correcting all colorblind problems completely. The results experienced will largely depend upon the degree of colorblindness. It would be much more sensible to assume that these glasses will simply enhance the color perception enough to make color distinctions much easier.

The glasses most likely are not going to help someone with red-green colorblindness see these hues perfectly, but they very well make it possible for the individual to finally be able to tell when meat has been properly cooked. That may sound like a small benefit, but this is one of many luxuries people without colorblindness often take for granted.

The attendees at Vision Expo West in Las Vegas this year where among the first people to witness the exciting new smart sunglasses from EnChroma. The sunglasses are expected to be released for sale to the public later this fall, and the prices are yet unknown. If these glasses work as well as advertised, and are reasonably priced, they could potentially have a major impact on the eye wear industry.
