Olympus new compact digital camera – OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-860 Tough – Apr 21, 2015– Tokyo, Japan (Techreleased) – Olympus Corporation is pleased to announce the new compact digital camera, OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-860 Tough, scheduled to go on sale in the middle of March 2015. This camera features five main Tough performance, waterproof up to 15m, dustproof, shockproof up to 2.1m, freezeproof up to -10°C, and crushproof up to 100kgf, along with a 21mm ultra wide-angle lens, a 180° tilting LCD monitor, and enhanced features, for thorough enjoyment of any outdoor activity.

The Tough series is a model equipped with the waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, freezeproof, and crushproof performance, pursuing the concept of worry-free shooting underwater, on snowy mountains, and other harsh environments that other cameras could not endure. The OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-850 Tough is highly-acclaimed for its ability to capture not only everyday scenes but also under severe environments. Its successor model, the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-860 Tough is the perfect camera for outdoor scenes with waterproof performance up to 15m, features such as Wi-Fi and GPS, and a variety of shooing functions.

With improvements to the waterproof sealing mechanisms, waterproof up to 15m is achieved on the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-860 Tough. Shock-absorbing mechanisms with shock-absorbing materials placed inside the camera, and a double chassis construction create shockproof performance for drops from a height of up to 2.1m, and toughness that can withstand crushing up to 100 kgf^*5. In addition to the capability to withstand up to -10°C in low temperature environments, a dustproof^*2 design is used which brings out the true value of this camera when used in punishing environments such as underwater, on mountains, rocky slopes, etc., where other digital devices fear to tread.

2. Tilting LCD monitor, Face button, and Self Portrait mode for fun selfies and shooting at any angle

This camera is equipped with a 180° tilting LCD monitor for shooting at any angle. The new Face button on the front of the camera can be used as a shutter release button. With a design that lets user easily shoot with the Face button or shutter release button, user can hold the camera with either hand. Invert display setting is also included which detect the camera’s direction and LCD position, and automatically switches the display. When used together with the Face button on the front of the camera, freedom of shooting from high and low angles is possible in a way never before available on any camera. Additionally, Self Portrait mode is now included on the mode dial. When this mode is selected, the camera automatically adjusts the focus on the person holding it, and adjusts the brightness of the AF Illuminator. Selfies are easy with the easy-to-see self timer and countdown display on the LCD monitor.

3. 21mm ultra wide-angle, 5x optical zoom lens

Superb optical technology cultivated over many years is crystallized in Olympus TG-860 Tough, for an extremely rare ultra wide-angle 21mm^*6, 5x zoom lens, among compact cameras. The waterproof, splashproof ultra wide-angle zoom lens is not only great for capturing wide-open landscapes such as the mountains and seaside, but is also advantageous in cramped spaces where the photographer may hesitate to step back. This lens also compensates for distortion that easily occurs around the edges of images captured on a wide-angle lens. For example, when taking a selfies, the camera compensates for distortion of faces in the corners of shots that causes an unnatural look in images. While achieving the ultra wide-angle lens, the camera is kept compact with a new prism possessing a high refractive index, and Super HR lenses.

4. Sportcam mode that captures active scenes with a variety of functions

The new Sportcam mode features a variety of shooting functions for optimal shooting in active scenes. An approximately 90° diagonal ultra wide angle is available for shooting movies, making it easy to keep subjects in the frame even in sports scenes with a great deal of movement. When the camera is attached to a backpack or belt using the separately-sold Sport Holder CSCH-123, user can capture powerful scenes using the face button on the front of the camera in a situation where normally difficult to hold the camera, such as kayaking, rafting, and climbing.

1) Smooth 60p movies
Recording progressive movies at 60 frames per second is possible. In addition to Full HD image quality, user can enjoy movies that reproduce smooth and natural motion. 1080 60p, 720 60p, 480 60p are available.

2) High-Speed Movie
This function lets user record 240 fps (640×360), and 120 fps (854×480) High-Speed Movies. Split-second movements can then be viewed in slow motion playback.

3) Time Lapse Movie
This function lets user record moving sports scenes in specific time frames (0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12, 30 sec.) and play them back as a movie with dropped frames.

4) Sport Burst shooting
This function lets user set a shutter interval from 0.05 to 60 seconds for sequential shooting. Because user can select the optimal shutter interval for a variety of sports, instantaneous movement that is difficult to shoot and normal scenes are easy to capture without missing a shot.

5. Built-in Wi-Fi for linking to a smartphone, and GPS

1) Wi-Fi
With built-in Wi-Fi and the iPhone and Android compatible smartphone application Olympus Image Share, it is possible to wirelessly connect the camera to a smartphone. Photos captured with the camera can be transferred on the spot, shared via social networking services, and a smartphone can be used as a remote controller for shooting. The smartphone can be used for smooth operations such as Touch AF Shutter, letting user activate the shutter in Program mode and iAUTO mode while viewing images on the smartphone’s Live View screen. Initial settings are easy by just scanning the QR code displayed on the camera screen with a smartphone.

2) GPS
The ability to record location information in images, as well as the route traveled to an SD card is the perfect tool for the outdoors and outdoor documenting activities and travels. Not only is the OLYMPUS STYLUS TG-860 Tough equipped with GPS, but it is also compatible with GLONASS and QZSS for better positioning accuracy than ever before. Additionally, the computer software Olympus A-GPS Utility or smartphone application Olympus Image Track can be used to obtain satellite orbital information ahead of time via the Internet for drastically reduced times from the beginning of positioning until information is received.
