The rear-wheel drive GS 300h features the all-new 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine that will debut in the IS 300h later this year.

Offering a maximum combined power output of 164kW, the drivetrain also features D-4S direct injection technology to boost power delivery and aid fuel economy.

The powerful yet efficient petrol-electric drivetrain is expected to deliver a fuel consumption figure as low as 6.0-litres per 100km while emitting 110 grams of CO2 per kilometre*.

The new GS 300h extends Lexus’ hybrid vehicle lead, bringing the total number of hybrid models offered globally to eight – including the CT 200h, GS 450h, RX 450h, LS 600h, forthcoming IS 300h, along with the ES 300h and HS 250h models (neither of which are sold in Australia).

Lexus GS 300h also debuts an all-new full-colour head-up display (HUD) that projects information such as road speed, gear position, radio station, navigation and pre-collision safety system warnings on the windscreen, reducing the need for eye movement away from the road ahead.

It also debuts all-new full LED fog lamps.

Lexus Australia chief executive Sean Hanley said the unveiling of Lexus’ eighth hybrid model demonstrates the luxury marque’s continued commitment to the powerful and efficient technology.

“Globally there is a clear and growing trend towards alternative powertrains and the introduction of the GS 300h only reinforces Lexus’ long-standing hybrid lead,” Mr Hanley said.

“Today over 30 per cent of Lexus customers in Australia choose to drive a hybrid – and we, like them, are firm believers that this is tomorrow’s technology today.

“The next step for Lexus in Australia is to determine the suitability of GS 300h for the Australian market before confirming local introduction,” Mr Hanley said.

The GS 300h will launch in selected markets late in 2013 and is currently under consideration for Australia.

Globally, the Lexus GS range will now include the GS 300h, GS 450h, GS 250, GS 350 and the GS 350 AWD.

Since its launch in the second quarter of 2012, the new GS achieved global sales of approximately 47,800 units last year, almost six times more than in 2011.
