Huawei Test Enables Breakthrough for HSPA+ Evolution – Oct 24, 2013– Shenzhen, China (Techreleased) – Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, today announced it completed successful tests of Dual Carrier-High Speed Uplink Packet Access (DC-HSUPA) and Dual Band-High Speed Downlink Packet Access (DB-HSDPA) technologies that achieved respective peak rates of 10.8 Mb/s upload and 39.6 Mb/s download*.
The tests made use of the latest version of Huawei’s access network equipment and a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor with its integrated Qualcomm® Gobi™ 3G/4G technology. Qualcomm Snapdragon and Qualcomm Gobi are products of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated.
DC-HSUPA effectively doubles upload data rates compared to single carrier HSUPA. DB-HSDPA breaks the “same band” limitation for operators in possession of spectrum resources on multiple bands, namely on the two mainstream UMTS bands, 900MHz and 2100MHz.
Both technologies are types of UMTS carrier aggregation for combining multiple mobile broadband carrier frequencies (in some cases from multiple spectrum bands) to increase overall data speeds and signal quality.
Now nearly 500 commercially launched smartphones and 134 UMTS operators worldwide support a precursor UMTS technology required for implementing DC-HSUPA and DB-HSDPA. Upgrading can be done by a simple software upgrade on the network side.
The successful joint test, completed in August this year, marks a breakthrough for the commercial viability of implementing these technologies on UMTS networks worldwide, and should signal a new phase of robust UMTS growth. The type of speeds and signal reliability made possible by these technologies enables further widespread adoption of the mobile apps users love – high-def photo uploads, real-time video chatting on social media, mobile video, and more – wherever they want to use them.
Over the next five years, as these technologies are rolled out, users everywhere will be able to enjoy new experiences made possible with faster speeds and more reliable connections wherever they go.
DC-HSUPA and DB-HSDPA are also a part of Huawei’s SoftMobile solution suite for building upon the successful foundation of SingleRAN amid industry movement away from voice-and-text, pure-pipe services to an era of data diversity and new vertical market revenue streams. SoftMobile provides ultra-broadband, orchestration and on-demand network features to leverage the creation of new mobile broadband business models.
* The theoretical peak rates supported by DB-HSDPA and DC-HSUPA are 42 Mbps on the downlink and 11.5 Mbps on the uplink respectively
