The Havyard 587 design was developed in close cooperation with ship owner and key suppliers of vital systems onboard. The hull of the ship has been constructed at the Cemre shipyard in Turkey, where Havyard constructs most hulls for their newbuilds. The hull arrived last week at Havyard`s own shipyard in Leirvik in Sogn, Norway, where completion of the outfitting and testing will take place.

Closely monitored
Jobjørn Løland is Project Manager for newbuild 117 at the Leirvik shipyard. – We took over the project around Easter, after the initial project phase was done in Fosnavaag, he says. The hull is built in Turkey where Havyard’s site-team follows up the construction on every level and discipline, something which ensures good quality of the work carried out there. This also makes it easier to take over the job on the hull and continue the process of completion in Norway. Løland says there is close cooperation with the site-team and that there were quite a few trips to Turkey in the early project phase. – It is important to follow up on the progress there, the Project Manager explains. – In the project organization we have experts in every special field, and as the hull nears completion, the production organization in Leirvik becomes more and more involved, he continues.

A lot in a short space of time
The newbuild went straight into dock as it arrived at the shipyard and according to plan it will remain there until the end of February. Also the main engines will be started up while in dock. – The largest pipes have been assembled in Turkey but all installations of machines and engines, outfitting and accommodation will be performed in Leirvik, in addition to painting and start-up, says Løland. Constructing a vessel in wet and Western Norway can initially be challenging. But an advantage of construction at Havyard in Leirvik is that hulls are placed in a roofed in dock to shelter outfitting and painting from snow and rain. Delivery of newbuild 117 is set for March 2014. – A lot will happen in a short period of time and the process needs to be planned in detail together with the various departments, says Jobjørn Løland.

Near customers
It is not only the dry dock that makes a ship construction at Havyard in Leirvik advantageous. Yard Director Trygve Solaas points out that proximity to customers is another great advantage. – It is easy for shipowners to travel here and follow up on the construction, he believes, as he adds that Havyard is part of the maritime environment in the west of Norway. – Our strategy is not only to focus on offshore vessels but also boats related to the fishing industry, and we are closely connected to the fishing environment with the fact that Havyard`s main office and design department are both located on Sunnmøre, he says.

Competence provides quality
Solaas says their employees within every special field have solid experience and competence with five to six newbuilds each year. – We also use quite a few subcontractors but we manage them in the same way as our own employees, and in that way we safeguard quality and progress of all our projects, says the Yard Director. Havyard delivers design, detail engineering and some of their own equipment for their newbuilds. Thereby they take an active role in the development and know the equipment. – Feedback from production is going back to designers. If there were to be any unfortunate solutions, it is easy to correct these the next time and to avoid the same mistake happening again. This benefits customers and we develop our designs through the feedback from both shipowner and shipyard during construction, he explains.

Demanding customers
The cooperation with the ship owner has been good. – Demanding customers who know what they want and who challenge us are very important. It is the best way to improve, says Solaas. – In Norway we cannot be cheapest, but we deliver a first-class product. Our most important motivation is that the customer is satisfied and feels that he gets at least what he pays for, Solaas continues, and adds that these types of vessels are a new segment for Havyard. – We have learnt a lot during this process, not least thanks to contributions from the ship owner themselves. In this project there have been quite a few technical innovations developed in close cooperation with shipping company and equipment supplier. –This forces us to think outside the box and we get to put new ideas into effect. That`s exciting, concludes Trygve Solaas.

Efficient and environmentally friendly fish transport
Havyard 587 contains the best within wellboat technology, setting a new standard for environmentally friendly and gentle transport and treatment of live fish. – Cylindrical cargo tanks and the efficient filter- and water treatment equipment make it possible to perform a closed transport across far longer distances compared to existing boats, says Olav Remøy, CEO of Fosnavaag Shipping. – This makes greater density of fish possible with a more gentle treatment of the live fish leading to better quality of the end product. There has also been put great emphasis on the hull and propulsion machinery to be as efficient as possible in real operating conditions, so that fuel economy is the best possible and that emissions are as low as possible.
– In order to reduce emissions and minimize the risk of spreading infections, all water will be UV-treated and run through an advanced two-step filter system. The boat will be equipped with an onboard delousing system for the fish, where the filter system will remove and destroy all lice on the salmon. These systems result in an extremely low mortality rate during the freight of fish, Remøy continues, and concludes that with all this in place, the Havyard 587 is the world`s most environmentally friendly wellboat.
– We are very pleased with the Havyard cooperation so far and we are going to follow up the construction even more closely now that the outfitting starts in Norway. We are looking forward to taking delivery of a top quality wellboat next spring and we are convinced that our customers will appreciate the qualities of this new vessel, Remøy concludes.
