With the newly revived series of films underway, it has opened the flood doors for a wide variety of merchandise and products adorning the Star Wars name. These products vastly range from logical (life-sized lightsabers) to just plain peculiar (Star Wars brand oranges anyone?), as an abundance of companies jump on the chance to become a small part of Star Wars history.

The Market

This trend has spread like wildfire, a trend that has trailed the release of every movie in the iconic series, and while there is a lot to sift through, many companies have taken it upon themselves to create something truly unique for fellow fans. One such company has designed an eagerly awaited upcoming line of headphones, earphones and a floating speaker inspired by the Death Star which has been quickly circulating around the internet.

The Company

Plox, an Australian tech company that has spent the last few years predominantly working with Bluetooth-functioning speakers, is quickly heading toward the release of their long-awaited Star Wars line. While you may not recognise the name, their efforts in the tech world has not gone without acknowledgement, as their upcoming variety of products are being manufactured in partnership with The Walt Disney Company.

As of 2012, Disney has purchased ownership of Lucasfilm, and in turn have taken control of the Star Wars brand. This fresh beginning has led to a new trilogy of films, beginning with 2015’s groundbreakingly successful Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which proved to exceed the already high expectations placed on its opening week. Shortly after this film ended its run in cinemas, Rogue One, a side story to the main Star Wars series, was announced for release in late 2016, and has likely had an impact on the viral attention that Plox has gotten over the recent months.

With Disney on board for this new selection of Star Wars products, anticipation has been growing steadily since their announcement. The company has assured fans that they are working in the best interests of their new brand, and this quality assurance has been a major boost for Plox’ online success.

At the heart of their impressive reception is a levitating Death Star speaker planned for release in early October. This 5w Bluetooth-enabled device revolves slowly while floating above its platform, moving in a way that is very reminiscent of the iconic, moon-shaped space station. This innovative piece of technology is proving to be exactly what the Star Wars merchandise market has been waiting for, and hoards of fans eagerly await the official release of these desktop star-destroyers.

While we will have to wait and see how these products fare upon their arrival, it’s easy to see that the Star Wars fan base are ready to welcome new things. This may be the beginning of a new trend toward upscale technology-based merchandising, and hopefully we get to see more fascinating products in the coming years.
